What I took away from the presentations and discussions we had this week is the growing importance of advertisements in the press. While I’ve always understood that advertisements a necessary means of sustaining the newspaper industry, the figures and facts shown during lesson were a startling revelation to me on how newspapers really need advertisements […]

Ivaneti of Sao Paulo has this to say of the Revitalisation project in her area: “We need to pay attention not only to the buildings, but also to life – human beings”. In the context of Interactive Multimedia Journalism, this web documentary does just that. Watching all the stories, we begin to learn about the […]

The arrival of the Internet makes the facilitation of information faster, and communication limited to those who have the tools or mediums, to do so. Through various platforms and outlets, one is therefore empowered to share what they know; anyone can be a civilian journalist now. However, as outlined in class, the Internet has both […]

Presentations in class were particularly interesting, with various examples of visual narratives, using the simplest of tools such as the annotation feature on Youtube, to the most complex ways of using motion capture technology with the Kinect. It is exciting to consider how far narratives have evolved, from the very first form of the verbal passing […]

On a hot and humid afternoon, my father and I head to Toa Payoh Hawker Center for some Ice Kachang. Where did this shaved ice treat come from? What are some permutations this traditional dessert has come in over the years? What makes Ice Kachang one of the most popular desserts in Singapore? I attempt to answer these questions and more in my video, with trivial and quips I picked up from the Ice Kachang Aunty. Accompanying the audio recording are photographs taken on the spot while asking the Ice Kachang Aunty questions, and eating with my father. Various parts of the video also feature quick flashes of photographs, creating a stop motion effect where viewers can be actively involved with the action on the screen. The crystalline texture of the shaved ice in these photographs, along with the brightly coloured syrup, makes the Ice Kachang not only a treat for my stomach, but also a treat for viewers’ eyes. Photographs of the secret ingredients that lie below this “ice mountain” show us that there is more to the Ice Kachang than meets the eye. With the appropriate music “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice playing in the background, let this video titillate your senses, as we take a closer look at the dessert we all know and love: the Ice Kachang.
